Scott Braden Cawthon is an American former video game developer and writer. He is the creator of the Five Nights at Freddy’s media franchise, which began with the development of the eponymous survival horror game in 2014. Released independently, the game achieved popularity and obtained a cult following.
Cawthon released two sequels, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 3”, in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The third installment was the last game Cawthon developed in the series. In 2016, he announced that he would not release any further games in the series, citing health issues as his reasoning for retiring from the franchise.

Scott Cawthon was born on March 27, 1976 and raised in San Jose, California. He graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in communication design. After graduating from college, he worked for Wild Shadow Studios as a designer and programmer for three years before moving to Texas to work for WMS Gaming. He left the company in 2004 and returned to California where he began working as a web designer for several online gaming sites. The player must use security cameras and other tools available to survive against animatronic characters that become active during the night, some of which may try to enter the player’s office. “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was released on August 8, 2014 for Microsoft Windows and later ported to Android, iOS, and OS X. The game received positive reviews from critics, who praised its originality and simplicity in comparison to other horror games.
In 2015, Cawthon released a sequel titled “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2”. The game takes place 30 years after the first installment with players controlling a new character named Jeremy Fitzgerald; who works as night watch security guard at the “Fazbear’s Fright: The Horror Attraction” attraction. The third installment, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 3”, was released on March 2, 2016. The fourth installment, “Five Nights at Freddy’s 4”, was released on July 23, 2016.
