Asus has recently released its new gaming laptop, the ROG FX503, and it’s already being compared to MSI’s popular GS63 Stealth Pro. Which of these should you choose? Let’s take a look at the specs and features to see what they have in common and what sets them apart.
Design
The Asus ROG FX503 is a sleek, well-built laptop with a premium look and feel to it. The large bezel around the screen may not win any awards for its aesthetics, but I think it gives the laptop a more rugged look that might appeal to some people. It has an attractive red backlit keyboard and an RGB strip on the bottom of the laptop that provides some nice ambient lighting that can be set to different colors or used as an indicator light when keys are pressed.
Performance
The Asus Rog Fx503 and the MSI Gaming GS63 both have a similar design and performance, but there are some key differences between these two laptops that may make one more desirable than the other. The Asus Rog Fx503 has a 15.6-inch 1080p display, an Intel Core i5-8300H processor, 8GB of RAM and a 1TB 7200RPM hard drive with a 256GB SSD alongside it. It also features Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 graphics with 2GB of GDDR5 VRAM as well as 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2. It also comes preloaded with Windows 10 Home edition as well as Windows 10 Pro for free until January 2020.
The MSI Gaming GS63, on the other hand, is a smaller gaming laptop in comparison to the Asus Rog Fx503 coming in at only 14 inches diagonally compared to 15 inches for the latter model.
Battery Life
The ASUS ROG Fx503 also performed well in our battery life tests, lasting 8 hours and 51 minutes with the display at maximum brightness, which is just a few minutes less than the previous model we tested. The Fx541 lasted a whopping 10 hours and 49 minutes in the same test, but it has a slightly smaller display size and lower resolution. Both laptops are on par with most of their competitors, but only last about two hours on standby mode. These numbers are not impressive by any means, but they’re what you’d expect from a gaming laptop.
The Asus ROG FX503-HQD001T (Quad Core i5-7300HQ / GTX 1050) is the perfect balance between portability and power for those looking for an affordable gaming laptop.
Software
The Asus Rog comes pre-installed with Windows 10 and has a Nvidia GTX 1050Ti graphics card, while the MSI gaming comes with Windows 10 as well but has a Nvidia GTX 1060 graphics card for an extra $200. The Asus Rog is about half an inch smaller than the MSI gaming and weighs 3 pounds, while the MSI gaming is 3.2 pounds and an inch thicker in comparison to the Asus Rog. One of the main concerns many people have with the laptop is that it does not come with any USB Type C ports. However, there are two USB 3.0 ports on each side and one 2.0 port on each side of the laptop which will allow you to charge your phone or connect your external hard drive or mouse if needed.
Price
The Asus Rog Fx503 starts at $999, while the MSI Gaming GS63 will set you back $1,299. You’re getting a lot more power for your money with the Rog Fx503, but you’ll also have to live with a slightly less sleek design and worse battery life. In that case, it might be worth spending the extra cash on the MSI Gaming GS63. It’s not too expensive of an upgrade if what you want is beefier hardware that performs better in games and offers longer battery life as well.
